Prevention Services at The Damien Center are designed to reduce a person’s risk of acquiring HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). From educating clients about medical interventions like Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) to providing community presentations about HIV and STIs, our program strives to fulfill The Damien Center’s mission to be leaders in HIV prevention. We offer services like HIV/STI testing and counseling and Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services (CRCS) on site as well as provide outreach services to areas of the community that need them most, including off-site testing and counseling and community education.
Preventing the spread of HIV is critical as we work toward an AIDS-free generation. Our prevention team works with each client to identify their risk factors and determine strategies to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV or other STIs. Our goal is that each person accessing services is empowered to make safer choices. With arange of prevention options available, our counselors help clients determine which path is best for them.
Exciting new developments have led to medical interventions that are designed to reduce the likelihood that a person will be infected with HIV. PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) are cutting-edge approaches to HIV prevention. Clients who are at high risk for HIV infection can obtain prescriptions from their healthcare providers to significantly reduce their risk of infection. While these treatments are only effective against the transmission of HIV and not other STIs, these new approaches will help limit the number of individuals infected with HIV.
Our prevention also reaches out to community partners to educate their clients about HIV and how to reduce their risk of HIV infection. The Damien Center regularly provides schools, substance abuse treatment facilities, and community organizations with educational programming that is customized for any size group. And, we offer multi-session interventions targeted to specific populations at the highest risk of HIV infection.
Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services (CRCS) provides a more intensive counseling experience for clients who are at the highest risk for acquiring HIV. Our CRCS counselor works with clients to determine a risk-reduction plan specific to their individual circumstances.
