Rumors and Myths

Rumors and myths are untrue stories accepted without critical examination. Many of these fictional phrases have evolved around AIDS. It is easier to believe these rather than do your homework about the facts. Get the truth confidentially at the Damien Center.

Here are some myths you should know about HIV/AIDS. These statements are NOT true:

  • There's a cure now.
  • No one dies from it anymore.
  • AIDS is a conspiracy that was deliberately infected into the African American society.
  • I can get AIDS from a mosquito bite, a toilet seat, touching someone, or kissing someone.
  • Condoms don't break.
  • The epidemic is over.
  • AIDS is a punishment from God.
  • Preventing AIDS is simply about education.
  • Anyone who gets AIDS today deserves it.
  • Magic Johnson has been cured from AIDS.
  • All HIV positive people are healthy enough to return to work.
